SUMMARY

In this study, the quality of municipal water Gonnoi as those used for water supply and for irrigation. In samples taken regular sampling approximately one per month over one year ( March 2004 to March 2005 ) studied the basic properties that characterize the water on both uses ( pH, electrical conductivity, concentration of sodium, calcium, magnesium, chlorine, nitrate, boron and heavy metals) and their quality was evaluated based on international standards.

The results showed that in terms of water intended for drinking except two boreholes ( position " Tsifliki " elementary Itea apartment and location " Basdeki " elementary Gonnoi apartment ), in which the concentration of nitrates ( and to some extent hardness ) was higher or near the upper permissible limit (50 ppm NO3-), all other water supply facilities are very good quality waters. In the case of drilling at " Tsifliki " nitrates seems not derived from inorganic fertilizers, but organic nitrogen sources. The pH was within acceptable ( 7.0-8.5 ), the hardness was found to range generally about 200 ppm CaCO3 and the chlorine concentration was much lower than the upper permissible limit (350 ppm).

As regards the water for irrigation in all cases ( except two ) the electrical conductivity was less than 0.70 mmhos / cm ( or 700 mmhos / cm) characterized as " good." Exceptions are drilling in positions " Lake " of the municipal district Kallipefki and " Tsifliki " of the municipal district of Itea, the waters of which the price of electric conductivity exceeded 700 mmhos / cm.

The chlorine concentration in all contexts was lower limits for all types of irrigation (140 ppm for surface irrigation and 105 ppm for drip irrigation ). The boron concentration was also very low ( far less than 0.7 ppm). As to the concentration of bicarbonate water classified as " small to moderate restriction " except in the case of drilling at " Lake " of the municipal district Kallipefki that water is characterized " with a high degree of restriction."
